My
experience in the various media for art is extensive. I have
settled on most of my two dimensional works being in paint or
fibers. I enjoy both oils and acrylics and find because of my early
training in oils I tend to handle acrylic very like oils. Because I
am a colorist I tend to use loads of color and rarely or never use
black from a tube (of course I mix my blacks). I use both brush and palette
knife in my work and find each useful in its own way. Most of my
colors are mixed on the canvas giveing me a great control of both
color and value in my work.
Because
my first Masters Degree was in Art Education, I have training in most media, including
watercolor and pastels and of course drawing but have not pursued
these media as I have moved on in my art work.
I
also enjoy mixed media work and find that I tend to go to mixed media
for my more whimsical art. I have a mixed media series on
“Red Hat
Ladies” and that has been an enjoyable journey.
My
work in fibers have focused on design and construction of Rya
rugs. Rya is a Scandinavian rug technique which uses the
ghiordes
knot for each yarn tuft. The ghiordes knot is also used in hand made
Persian carpets. The scarcity of genuine wool Rya yarns in the USA and
the lengthy time commitment makes the creation of the rugs a slow and
labor intensive process.
